Garden rooms are increasingly becoming more than just extra storage spaces or places to

potter around with gardening tools. They have evolved into versatile extensions of our

homes, serving various purposes like home offices, gyms, art studios, or just extra reception

rooms for your home. But what about adding a toilet and bathroom to your garden room?Let's explore how this can be done and what to consider.

Considering the Possibilities

Adding a toilet and bathroom to your garden room opens up a world of possibilities. It can

transform your garden room into a fully functional living space, making it ideal as a gym, for

occasional visiting guests or even for your own use as a secluded retreat.

Regulations and Permissions

So can I Put a Toilet & Bathroom in a Garden Room? We get asked if we can install a toilet in our garden rooms all the time. So let’s start at the beginning. The room itself will be built under Permitted Development rules so won’t need Planning Permission or Building Regulations. However the really important point to note about fitting a toilet or bathroom to a garden room is that you will need to connect to the main drainage system and that does involve getting Building Control approval.

Building Control Approval

On your behalf we would simply make a Building Control Application with your local council.

Then once the trench is dug for the sanitary pipework we would get that inspected and

approved and then supply a drains test at the completion of the build.

Design Considerations

Designing a garden room with a toilet and bathroom requires thoughtful planning. You'll

need to consider the layout, plumbing, ventilation, aesthetics, and of course if it’s possible

to reach the main sewer with an appropriate fall. The fall needs to be within the ratio of

1/40-1/110.

Layout

The layout should be efficient, maximizing space without feeling cramped. Consider the

location of the toilet, sink, and shower or bath, ensuring there's enough room to move

comfortably.

Ventilation

Proper ventilation is essential to prevent moisture buildup and mold growth, and is required

to get Building Control approval. Install vents or windows that can be opened to allow fresh

air to circulate.

Aesthetics

Make sure the design of the toilet and bathroom complements the overall style of your

garden room. Choose fixtures and finishes that are both functional and visually appealing.
